Joe Kaptein Presents New Album "Pool Sharks"

Tāmaki Makaurau-based musician Joe Kaptein continues to establish himself as one of Aotearoa’s most dynamic and collaborative artists with the release of his latest project, Pool Sharks. Known for his versatility as a multi-instrumentalist, Kaptein has contributed his skills to groups such as The Circling Sun, Princess Chelsea’s Dream Warriors, Bub, The Situations, Crystal Chen’s band, and power trio AIGHT.

His newest venture, Jandal Records, is dedicated to amplifying “interesting music from Aotearoa.” The label’s first release arrives in bold style with Pool Sharks, a collaborative album created alongside Wil Goodinson, David Harris, Ben Frater, Lukas Fritsch, Andrew Isdale, and Finn Scholes.

A Diverse Sonic Journey

The album begins with the dreamy textures of “Sleepy Space Cadet”, setting the stage for a musical journey that spans genres and moods. Listeners are treated to brassy layers in “Herb Albert”, while the cosmic groove of “Sunday Arvo I” evokes the ease of a slow weekend coffee.

Other highlights include the expansive, ten-minute “Second Wind”, the soulful pulse of “Five Stone Sourdough”, and the psychedelic rhythms of “Sunday Arvo II”. The high-energy “Twelve Foot Taco” hints at frenetic jazz fusion, and the nearly nine-minute closer “Cascade” wraps the album with soul-funk swagger.

Release Events and Vinyl Edition

The project’s release is marked by a special two-night residency at The Apartment on Karangahape Road, offering fans the chance to experience the collective’s live sound in an intimate setting. A limited vinyl LP edition of the album is also available through select record stores and directly via Jandal Records’ official Bandcamp page.

A Bold Step for Jandal Records

With Pool Sharks, Kaptein not only demonstrates his musical range but also positions Jandal Records as a new platform for innovative sounds from New Zealand. The album’s playful yet masterful execution showcases the strength of collaboration and the creative energy fueling Aotearoa’s independent music scene.

"Pool Sharks" is a celebration of artistic freedom, collaboration, and community — a debut release that signals much more to come from Joe Kaptein and Jandal Records.
