Drake Escalates Legal Fight with UMG
Drake’s legal clash with Universal Music Group (UMG) over Kendrick Lamar’s chart-topping diss track Not Like Us has taken a sharper turn. The rapper is now seeking detailed records about Lamar, including his recording contract, financial information, and any communications involving UMG executives related to alleged misconduct by the Compton artist.
Push for Unredacted Documents
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Drake previously received a copy of Lamar’s UMG contract—heavily redacted to the point of being “virtually unreadable.” Now, the OVO founder wants full, unredacted access, along with information about Interscope Records’ financials and the valuation of Lamar’s music catalog over the past five-and-a-half years.
Allegations of Profit-Driven Defamation
Drake claims the documents will prove that UMG, led by chairman Lucian Grainge, backed and promoted the alleged defamatory statements in Not Like Us to fuel label rivalries and increase revenue. While both artists are signed to UMG, Lamar is under Interscope Records, and Drake is with Republic Records—adding a competitive layer to the high-profile dispute.
