For years, the Spice Girls have served as icons and inspirations for their LGBTQ fans. But this summer, Sporty Spice herself is showing even more love for her queer fans.
On Thursday (May 13), Melanie C announced that she would be performing at this year’s New York City Pride festival and its closing ceremonies, joining the ranks of performers like Grace Jones, Melissa Etheridge and Pabllo Vittar. This will be her first appearance at a North American Pride event.
But that is only the beginning for the singer’s summer -- Melanie C will also embark on her WorldPride world tour, including dates in Brazil, Amsterdam, Germany and the UK, with the London queer collective Sink the Pink and their bevy of drag queens. The stage show will involve “all the hits, a sequined cat suit (with Adidas, of course), and four extra Spices in drag,” according to a statement.
Melanie also said in a statement that she is excited to show some love to her LGBTQ fans around the world. “This is a bit of a dream come true for me,” the singer said. “I’m going on tour with Sink the Pink, the most inclusive, fun and fabulous club night in London and we’re taking their best drag queens round the world, for a truly special show. I can’t wait!”
Glyn Fussell, a presenter on BBC’s Drag Queen’s Den and a co-founder of Sink the Pink, said it was an honor to be working with Melanie. “It's not every day a bunch of drag queens get to step out and tour the world with a Spice Girl,” he said. “This tour shows how committed Melanie is to her LGBTQ fans and we are frankly shitting sequins we are so excited.”
The new tour will come just on the heels of Melanie C’s reunion tour through the UK with the rest of the Spice Girls, starting later this month in Dublin.
