As we sizzle into summer, emerging rapper Calebdoee is turning up the heat with his latest single, “YOU&ME.” Straight off his recent EP, The Leftovers, “YOU&ME” pulls listeners into Calebdoee’s unique soundscape with a subtle reminder to love the one you’re with.
Since releasing his debut mixtape Few Know in 2019, Calebdoee has continued to refine and expand his sound. The mixtape marked the beginning of a strong creative partnership with engineer T-Zank, who also collaborated on Calebdoee’s current single and EP. Beyond engineering, T-Zank has played a key role developing Calebdoee’s music through mixing, mastering, and co-producing tracks.
Calebdoee’s self-dubbed “substance-filled hip hop” is a crafted balance of genuine skill and true passion for the art. “I have a particular taste and sound and style of music that I don’t hear from other artists these days,” Calebdoee shares. “Around covid, I realized I could do this and take it to the next level and do cool things for the city, for myself, and for my family.”
Prior to his recent release, Calebdoee released a concept album inspired by The Godfather which touched upon themes like gangster life, family, romantic love, and destiny. Calebdoee’s latest mixtape is a homecoming for the artist, who was on an experimental sound journey and is now returning to his true self.
When it comes to writing music, Calebdoee has a tried-and-true method for nailing the song. “I plan in advance for the booth,” explains the rapper. “Sometimes I get in and the bars don’t fit, so I end up writing in the booth rather than free styling in the booth. I did a lot of writing on my last project to get the feel of being myself again and getting outside of the concept project I made.”
“This EP is really about getting back to having fun and not focusing on the trials and tribulations,” he adds. “I had the beat for four years for ‘YOU&ME’ but never felt it was a good time to release it. But now it’s perfect for summertime. It’s about getting away from all this and showing love.”
From the sultry opening to the vivid storyline, Calebdoee’s “YOU&ME” takes listeners on a romantic joyride. Calebdoee wants listeners to enjoy the song for what it is - a simple song for everyone to enjoy this summer. “If you take anything from it, it’s being decisive with a girl you love. Take her serious. Make the most of what you have. Love her and cherish her as you’d want her to cherish you.”
Through his music, Calebdoee hopes to transform the hip-hop scene of Indiana, shaping it to be a more welcoming space for other up-and-coming artists. “I’m passionate about music. I have fun and a true love for it. I’m happy and blessed to be here.”
In addition to “YOU&ME,” Fans can look forward to the music video for “Blues,” off his January mixtape, out in June.
