Papatinho Honors Rio Funk Culture With New Album MPC

Papatinho Shows Off His Brazilian Funk Roots With New Album MPC

Brazilian producer Papatinho, best known for collaborations with global stars like Snoop Dogg and Shakira, has released his latest project, MPC (Música Popular Carioca)—a heartfelt tribute to the sounds of Rio de Janeiro’s funk culture. The album title carries a double meaning: it stands for “Carioca Popular Music” while also referencing the iconic MPC audio sampler, the instrument Papatinho used to craft the project.

A Return to Baile Funk Origins

MPC celebrates the foundational sounds of Rio’s baile funk, uniting artists from across generations. The lineup includes funk legends MC Marcinho and MC Carol, alongside contemporary stars such as Anitta and MC Cabelinho. The album also draws on the influence of Miami bass, a key ingredient in the early days of Rio funk. “I grew up listening to funk, and this is a genre I produced entirely on the MPC,” Papatinho explained, emphasizing the sampler’s central role in shaping the project’s sound.

Recorded in the Neighborhoods

To preserve funk’s raw and local energy, Papatinho recorded the album using a dynamic microphone in a variety of real-world settings. Sessions took place in neighborhoods like Cidade de Deus with Cidinho and at a bar in Borel’s Favela with Duda do Borel, grounding the album firmly in Rio’s vibrant cultural roots. By blending authentic street recording with modern production, MPC offers both a tribute to the past and a fresh evolution of funk for new audiences worldwide.
